2002 Season
Bought a Yamaha R1 from Clive Wadey of Paxford Garage. A well
prepared bike, built in 1999 for Sandra and Pete Barnett to contest the 1999
Isle of Man TT Races. The engine is pretty much in standard trim with a K&N
filter added and an Ackropovick exhaust silencer fitted. The EXUP valve has been
retained to keep the legendary mid range torque of the R1. I will see how the
seasons results progress and make a decision to keep or ditch the EXUP valve.
Bought a set of rear set brackets from Debben Performance. These brackets retain the standard R1 rearsets, but move them back and up about 25mm in each direction. This is a much cheaper option than buying Harris or other rearsets. Mark Tyrell of Chapman-Tyrell Racing in Evesham machined up a longer gear change rod to suit the revised gear lever position. Also had to open up the gear change rod hole in the frame slightly.
The bike has been completely stripped and rebuilt over the winter and a quantity of spares was purchased from Magnum Motorsport in Redditch who compete in the British Superstock championship.
September 1st 2002
Crashed at Mallory Park at the final round of the EMRA championship
(See Reports 2002). Sustained a compound fracture of my right Tibia and Fibula
which may put next seasons racing into jeopardy. Having stitches out on
Wednesday 18th September and have already started with Physiotherapy. Long road
to get fit again and will have to discuss with consultant the earliest I can
have the pin and screws removed.
Thanks to everyone who has contacted me regarding the crash. It is nice to now that I am not forgotten.
26th September 2002
Had 57 stitches removed from wounds. Leg is healing well and I can now stand on
it and take some tentative steps unaided. Another consultant said that due to
the severity of the break the pin should stay for 24 months but it will be OK to
race with it in place, so good news there then.
4th November 2002
Saw consultant. Had got an infection in the leg two weeks ago but antibiotics
seemed to have cleared it up OK. Unfortunately the X-rays show that the bone is
not healing. I have to have more X-rays in four weeks, if bone has not
started to heal they will have to remove some screws to allow the bones to be
forced together. Hopefully all will be OK, because this will seriously delay my
recovery.
On the plus points though, I can now walk unaided although not very quickly and
have returned to driving and work at last.
Have removed the fairing from the bike. Rear subframe is slightly bent but nothing which cannot be straightened. Need to get hold some parts and then fully strip and rebuild the bike, ready for next season.
10th December 2002
Saw consultant again on December 4th. Took three X-rays which thankfully showed
the bone is healing well. I have gone back on the crutches again to ensure that
I do not overdo it. Perhaps I came off the crutches too soon with hindsight.
Back to consultant in six weeks.
